Yarn Piece is a performance and sound piece which originally was staged at pool party! 2, at Buddies in Bad Times for the Next Stage Festival by Toronto Fringe. It was then re-staged and filmed in full in our home kitchen a few months later. The re-staging of the piece in our kitchen expanded the layers of domesticity in the piece.
Yarn Piece begins with the creation of bundles of cotton string from three spools. These stringy bundles are then washed and hung on a drying rack. The dripping water from the yarn falls into a metallic oven drawer, which is equipped with contact microphones. Instead of collected sound waves, contact mics pick up vibration. These vibrations were then manipulated with granular synthesis by Ben Rositsan, my artistic collaborator. The sounds of the water dripping become glitched and repeated, spiralling into loops and elongating the process of the "chore" and changing it's relationship with time.
